Index Ventures

Index Ventures backs founders from seed through growth across AI, fintech, enterprise software and security. Here's what the firm looks for — and how to get your pitch ready before you approach them.

Index Ventures is a venture capital firm headquartered in London, with offices in San Francisco, New York, Geneva and Jersey. Founded in 1996, it grew out of Index Securities, a Swiss bond-trading firm, and now manages roughly €11.7 billion across its funds.

Stage and sector

Index invests from seed through growth under a "one fund, one team" model — the same partnership backs a company from its first cheque through late-stage rounds, rather than handing it between separate teams. Sector focus spans AI and machine learning, fintech, enterprise and business applications, security and infrastructure, consumer, healthcare, media and mobility. The firm spun out its life-sciences practice as Medicxi in 2016, so pure biotech now sits outside its remit.

Notable investments

Figma, Revolut, Wiz, Discord, Dropbox and Etsy. Partner Danny Rimer led the Figma seed round in 2013 and topped the Forbes Midas List Europe in 2025.

Is Index Ventures hard to reach directly?

Like most firms at this scale, Index sees far more companies than it can back, and warm referrals move faster than cold outreach. That's not a reason to avoid applying — it's a reason to make sure the material you send holds up on first read, because you rarely get a second one.

What does Index Ventures actually look for?

Founders rethinking large, established industries with a technology-native approach, and a clear line between the product and the market it's built for. Index publishes extensively for founders — its "Winning in the US" guide on transatlantic expansion is a good read on how the firm thinks.
