Not Every Investor Is Buying Right Now
A 'not right now' isn't always a rejection of your business. Investors have cycles too, and the founders who ask the right question early save themselves months.

Here's something founders forget: investors have cycles too. Kevin Ryan, who built DoubleClick and MongoDB into billion-dollar exits, remembers stretches where "companies were literally begging for money and were thin on runway," simply because capital had dried up market-wide. It wasn't personal. It was timing.
Plenty of respected investors are between funds, mid-raise with their own LPs, or fully allocated for the year. None of that makes them bad investors. It makes them honest ones, if they tell you so. The mistake founders make is assuming every "not right now" is a rejection of the business, when it's often just a closed checkbook at that exact moment.
The smartest founders build this into their process. Instead of blasting a list of a hundred names, they ask a simple, direct question early: are you deploying capital right now? It's a fair question, and any serious investor will respect it rather than resent it. It also filters out a lot of wasted follow-up before it starts.
Persistence still matters when the timing genuinely isn't there yet. Robbie Allen, whose startup collected 173 rejections during one raise, later put it simply: they were "considered successful" anyway, because the round eventually closed with the right backers, not the first ones. Pitchtree.ai does the timing check upfront, matching founders with investors already confirmed to be actively deploying in their space.
